Why Google’s New Licensing System for News Media Is Bad

Google, the world’s largest advertising company, outlined a new licensing system for news publishers today in response to increasing criticism that the tech giant unfairly benefits from content produced by others.

Pros and Cons

Pro

  • This could lead to increased reach and revenue for media companies and publishers that sign licensing contracts.

Con

  • This could lead to reduced reach and revenue for media companies and publishers that don’t.

Political Outcomes

My Guess

  • Google will promote the mostly left-wing authoritarian media that it likes, and will downplay the mostly right-wing libertarian media that it dislikes.

What It Means for Me

If my guess is correct, the new licensing system will hurt my publishing operations. As a small independent media creator who promotes a civil-libertarian perspective, I don’t feel welcome by Google.

I fully support Google doing whatever the heck it wants, and fully support other companies doing whatever the heck they want.

I also really hope more people realize how Google shapes the ideas and concepts that enter or get blocked from our minds.
